Live Happening

IMPROPERBAVISATION is an exploration of site-specific improvisations in public spaces. It is a play on the contraction of probably-improper-improvisation. We work with exactly what is there when we get to a site. We bring with us only our inherent animal and human selves, and all our acquired skills, habits, prejudices from our cultural heritages and personal histories. We use simple improvised physical acts to mutate familiar situations in public places. The public present respond by adjusting their ‘public personae’ spontaneously. The overall social ‘score’ of the civic ‘symphony’ is maintained, while the ‘wild notes’ that emerge, start to mutate within the public in very personal ways.

MEN AT WORK, San Francisco, California. In this information age, there is nothing like the deep satisfaction of comradely sweat. Men at work together, projecting the romance of the unshakable shadow of evolutionary conditioning, as sensual as the survival of the individual, and as forceful as the survival of the species, all without a choice. I hold on tight to this cold and finite bronze message, in hopes of reaching what was once hot, molten, and formless ambiguity.
LANTERN, San Francisco, California. Every Artist wants inspiration. I am just waiting for the light to shine on me.
MUSIKHUSET, Aarhus, Denmark. Don’t swim. Don’t sink. It is music to my ears, resounding underwater. We stare each other into a closed circuit. There, we idle, in this uneventful flash of eternal present.
NO PARKING, Aarhus, Denmark. Lodged in this street sign, a reality fleshes itself out. Then runner-by, go, home is where the heart is, elating, towards endless horizon, where fellow travelers rejoice, together, in each our separate ways.
LILLE HAVFRUE, Copenhagen, Denmark. A mermaid must have very great thoughts, since people like to steal her head, for unknown reasons.
PARLIAMENT BUILDING, Rome, Italy. Jamming between the walls of order, while wondering what is ‘right and wrong’.
MEN AT WORK TWO, San Francisco, California. Between the flag and the pistol, I think I am okay. When I eventually fall with everything else, I wonder if the angel would fly away.
DANNEBROG, Aarhus, Denmark. Riding the high of the Danish flag, I drop the fear of falling. I let it go where it wants, let it go where it’s needed, let it free until I need it back.
DREISAM, Freiburg, Germany. Dreisam is one river. Dreisam is water. Dreisam is freezing. One, in of itself. Two, through my body and mind. Trio in wild cellular agitation. Duet of water and blood. Solo in a brief moment.
BIBLIOTEK, Aarhus, Denmark. Above whispering voices, mumbling words, and flipping pages rest forgotten thoughts in lines, hidden in layers of dust.
CERESBRØNDEN, Aarhus, Denmark. Fertile is the species. Let me drown in this peaceful bath, where pigs pee as much as the intellect could hold. It is a good morning to be awakened by the ripples that echo, between four cold granite. I cannot hold still for more than a feeling.
JORD HUL, Aarhus, Denmark. You have to go beneath the surface to know what is really there.
FAMILIEN, Kristianstad, Sweden. All families have shadows, what these shadows look like, all depends from where the light is shinning. On the other hand, if there were no light shining on them, you wouldn’t see any shadow.
COLUMNS, San Francisco, California. The left column was engineered to support all the weight of the roof. And the right column was engineered to support all the weight of the symbolism that we care to put into the structure. In between them is a column of space, supporting nothing but its empty self. I would say you could probably fit fifteen to twenty perfect, and not so perfect citizens within this column. Depending on how you would stack them up of course. And we shall call it the pillar of our society.
